SUNFLOWER MINI CANVAS - Another World is Possible
Sunflowers are amazing plants. They are used to pull heavy metals out of contaminated soil. Sunflowers have been planted around nuclear disaster sites like Chernobyl and Fukushima. For me, the sunflower symbolizes both the hope and the work that is needed to co-create a better world. "Pray and move your feet" as the elders say.
The world is a messy, awful place. I don't know about you, but I certainly can't go back to business as usual; that's what got us in this mess. The world is also full of artists and dreamers and lovers and fighters working to make change every day. We believe in our very bones that another world is possible. A world where relationships and our shared humanity come before the bottom line or institutional allegiance.
Another world is possible.🌻🌻🌻
Mini canvases are 4x4 inches square, and 1.5 inches deep; these are perfect for your wall or nestling on a shelf. Paintings are finished with a satin varnish. When I paint, my heart returns to my backyard garden in Idaho, to all those layers, the careful hand digging with a garden fork. The layers are important. The slow remediation of the soil was hard work. Painting feels easier than that, but not on the days when I’m stuck. In the end, it’s the same intentional process of working through a season, season after season, and seeing what fruits emerge from the soil.
The first poem I had published outside of university featured wild sunflowers. They symbolize hope and resilience. I guess it’s time to lean in and start painting them.
