"Poppies Poppies Poppies" 5×5 mixed media canvas, painted for 28 February Flowers Instagram challenge.

The Story: I love how huge yet papery-thin poppies can be. I love the vibrant hues of reds, yellows, and oranges; I also love the whites and pale pinks! Mostly I think "poppies poppies poppies" and want to take a nap in a summery field. When my students read (and then watched) The Wizard of Oz, I had to explain to them that at the time of publication and production, poppies were still heavily associated with opiates. We had the same conversation when we watched Alice in Wonderland-- opium dens were legal. Who wants a nap, now??
.
The Process: I used a cheap brush on its side and smooshed. The pinks are a mix of Matisse Australian Salmon Gum and Liquitex Portrait Pink, which are inexplicably on heavy rotation at the moment. I hit the linework with Decocolor Premier and Chalkola Metallic markers. Poppies poppies poppies!!
