This triptych is a mighty pieces of my artistic journey.

James Castle was a Deaf artist who lived in Idaho; he attended the Idaho School for the Deaf in the early 1910s, but was an unsuccessful student because he was unable to speak, and the school was an oral school during that era. He was a prolific self-taught artist, creating thousands of pieces from the materials he found in his environment.

Crows are known to be intelligent birds. They recognize human faces, collect shiny pretty items for their nests, and even give gifts. They hold grudges. Ravens in captivity have been taught to paint.

James Castle gave art rather selectively, and observed the reaction of the giftee; if they didn’t respond the way he preferred, he never gave them art again. Like crows, Castle had a particular way of collecting and curating items from his environment. Like the crows, and like Castle, members of my family have been dedicated archivists, hoarders, and local historians. We save photos, tokens, fabric, bits of paper, holding on to the pieces of memory and allowing an archive to accrete.

I am Descended from Crows is a set of three 8×8-inch mixed media pieces on cradled board. I used a mix of antique, vintage, and contemporary reclaimed paper, ink, pencil, water-soluble graphite, and acrylic paint. The pieces are finished with faux-encaustic technique using acrylic medium.

We make every attempt to represent colors as accurately as possible, but be aware that differences among screens and paint pigments may result in variations. Please read our Shipping and Return Policy before purchasing.
