Choreomania
Choreomania is a piece from the Ophelia (2023) body of work that did not appear in the final exhibition collection.
Choreomania is also called Dance Fever, a form of collective hysteria documented in the middle ages. It is also the second track title on the Dance Fever album by Florence + the Machine, which I listened to extensively during the time period I was working on this body of work. Florence Welch's lyrics often pay homage to her struggles with mental illness, and this track in particular contains the lines:
"The pressure and the panic
You push your body through
I am especially fascinated with Ophelia's descent into so-called madness, and the increasing pressure she was under from her father, brother, and Hamlet.
"Choreomania" is a 5x7-inch gouache, pencil, and soft pastel on paper. It should be framed behind glass or plexi to protect the pastel work.
We make every attempt to represent colors as accurately as possible, but be aware that differences among screens and paint pigments may result in variations. Please read our Shipping and Return Policy before purchasing.
